Gardens are more than a place where people can cultivate their tomatoes and turnips for their own pleasure. Gardening and gardens since World War 2 have become much more than little plots of dirt. They have been transformed into a place where people are able to connect with another, and even more importantly a place where it creates peace.

It is also a beginning point for children to begin to learn about the rea value and essence of food. Below are a few examples where children and adults are in gardens.

We have also come across unconventional gardens such as Lorraine’s backyard chickens, and defiant gardens such as war gardens, prison gardens, guerilla and rooftop gardens

In this class we were trying create a new type of critical thinking that gardening and how food gets to us are not as simple and innocent as pulling it from the ground anymore.

We have also tried to have given as much credit to those who use traditional methods that are still in the trade today. Some of these pioneers of the food business have seen heavy competition from others farmers, but also from the large companies that are slowly taking over our food systems. That also goes without saying we have also analysed places where people are being taken advantage of food their worth as food producers while others make money off their hardships. One of those examples we learned about was Starbucks and their at first façade of being a fair trade coffee company.

We concluded that despite our critical thinking and ideas to counter these system errors in our food systems, we have realized that even we depend on those same food systems. Although from all the information we have gathered from weekly presentations and our readings from Empire of Food and City Farmer, we have become more engaged with our food and what it means to us as a class as well as individuals from diverse backgrounds and tastes. We realize now that food is more than a biological necessity to survive, but it has become a monoculture a technological industry, one that is trying to make conventional farming extinct and profit the main priority. We now as renewed individuals in the food system are more aware of what or choices are and what they might cost to us, other people, and the earth.

Throughout this course on urban agriculture we have touched upon some of the features characterizing the deterioration of our environment due to our ways of producing food in large scales, such as the pollution effects of Nitrogen, ineffective irrigation methods, GMOs side effects, and food security
